Toyota Camry Safety Notes
Seatback-mounted side-impact air bags and curtain-style head-protection air
bags, that extend to protect outboard occupants in both the front and rear
seats, are both standard on the Camry. They supplement required front air bags
and three-point seatbelts in all seating positions. A knee air bag also helps to
further protect the driver's legs. Front seatbelts have adjustable upper anchors
for providing a comfortable and safe position for the shoulder belt and are
equipped with pretensioners to reduce belt slack in the event of a crash. Though
it is always safest to travel with children in riding in the rear seats, an
occupant classification sensor for the front passenger seat will automatically
disable the front- and side-air bag for that seat if it detects that a child is
seated there. Sensors that detect the driver's seat position and front seatbelt
usage also influence the level of front air bag deployment. The front and side
air bags and pretensioners will also not deploy if the front passenger seat is
unoccupied. Comfort guides in the rear outboard seats can help children who have
outgrown child restraints or small adults position the shoulder portion of the
seatbelts more safely and comfortably though rear seat passengers may find that
the belts tug a bit too snugly for complete comfort. There are adjustable,
locking head restraints in all of the seating positions. The front and rear
outboard headrests are tall enough even when fully lowered to limit rearward
head travel and whiplash injury, but the center rear version must be raised.
Daytime running lights are available by leaving the headlight switch in its Auto
position. Driving with kids: Rear-facing infant seat bases are subject to tilt
when installed using the seatbelts in the center rear seats, and some models may
also exhibit tilt in the rear outboard seats. Installation using the LATCH
anchors, available in both rear outboard seats, should provide a secure fit;
access to the LATCH anchors is relatively easy due to their shallow position
between the cushion and seatback. There are three tether strap anchors on the
rear parcel shelf.

Hybrid Technology
The most advanced hybrid powertrain
The HYBRID SYNERGY DRIVE power
unit integrates the strong elements of an electric motor and a
gas/petrol engine. It is not merely a package that has an electric motor
and a gas/petrol engine on board. Toyota applied cutting edge
technologies based on our latest research to integrate the dual power
sources in the most ideal way.
There are other models called "hybrid vehicles" in existence, but Toyota
is fully confident that our HYBRID SYNERGY DRIVE is the most advanced
hybrid powertrain in the world. In fact, HYBRID SYNERGY DRIVE is one of
the very few systems in the world in 2005 that fully complies with the
UN's definition of a "hybrid vehicle".
